Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519) was a scientist and artist.
He had many theories about body proportions. Two of them were:
a person's height is equal to their arm span
a person's foot is one sixth of their height
Are Leonardo da Vinci's theories true for Year 8 New Zealand Students?
Carry out a statistical investigation to answer this question.
All work to be completed in your maths book please.
Remember that you need to include all the steps:-
understanding the problem,
planning and predicting (including what data to collect),
data collection (you may work in a group within your team to collect data, aim to collect data from about 30 students),
data analysis including various graphs, distribution features (I notice that ...), summary statistics (mean, median, range etc.)
conclusion (using statistical language where possible such as - evidence to suggest, likely, cluster, trend, ratio, normal/skewed etc. and remembering to refer back to original question)
Find out what a Quadrant Count Ratio is, calculate it for your data set and explain what it shows.
EXTENSION WORK:
Combine your data with data collected by other students. Ensure that each piece of data is only counted once. You should try to have at least 100 year 8 students in your new data sample. Repeat the data analysis and conclusion steps of your statistical investigation for this new enlarged set of data. Explain why your results might be different with a larger data set.
Work is due to be submitted on Friday 29th November (week 7).
It is expected that all students who have been in school for the two and a half weeks of this statistical investigation work will attempt some extension work.
Mrs Attard will be available for conferencing only on Wednesday and Friday during period five in week 6. Normal conferencing will resume in week 7; Monday Team F pod, Tuesday Room 13 (for Team D), Wednesday Team E pod. Any student needing additional guidance during week 6 should see Mrs Attard before school in Room 13 or email her (mandy@bbi.school.nz).
